Summer in the city: safe balconies for cats.

Net and false floor

The most important safety measure for stress-free cat fun on the balcony is the cat net. It is extra sturdy, can withstand teeth and claws and has the correct mesh size. The net should be tight, but not too tight. This will keep your cat safely inside and prevent them from climbing up it. Secure all sides, cracks and gaps and ideally pull the net up two meters. If it is not possible for you to attach hooks or screws (always check with the landlord/landlady), there are also suitable tensioning or clamping devices. If your balcony has a wide ledge, attach the net on the outside. If the railing is narrow, it is better to put it on the inside. This will stop your cat from jumping onto a ledge that is too narrow and slipping off.

Better safe than sorry: double check

Once you have installed the net, you should check the following points: does your balcony have a railing with bars? Then you also need to make this cat-proof. You can use raffia or tube mats for this, for example. Also check your future cat oasis for sharp or pointed objects. Are all plant pots stable and secure? Are all plants free from pesticides and artificial fertilizers? Speaking of plants: Many balcony plants appear harmless, but are inedible for our house cats. So be sure to check the relevant lists. Catnip and cat grass are guaranteed harmless. And finally, you should secure the balcony door with a stopper.

Chill zones: The right way to hang out

Now you can allow your cat to explore the balcony for the first time. For the optimum chill factor, you can gradually set up various resting places for your cat. For example, a scratching post, a flower box specially padded for your velvet paw or a board on the wall. The higher the better - cats love to look down from above. Perhaps you can set up a catwalk, i.e. a beam that spans the balcony above your head? A shady spot and a water bowl are also essential.

Pure luxury: cat flap to the balcony

If you want your cat to be able to enter the balcony at any time, you can treat it to a cat flap. There are models that can also be installed in a glass door. Provided that the owner of the apartment agrees. Or you can have the pane of the balcony door replaced later. This way, your house cat can get a breath of fresh air at any time of day or night, even in winter.
