Happier in a group.
Guinea pigs are still often kept individually in homes. However, if you want to make your guinea pig happy, make sure they have a fulfilling life in a group. This will make them much more balanced, stress-resistant and interested - which in turn makes it easier for them to interact with humans. When putting the group together, you should make sure that it is not just pure females living together. However, to prevent offspring, it is best to get a few male, neutered guinea pigs (castrates). There should also be at least two guinea pigs, preferably more! You will then hear from their squeaking that company makes them happy.
Stroking and cuddling guinea pigs properly.
First things first: guinea pigs are not cuddly animals. Nevertheless, you can give your guinea pig attention. If it trusts you, a guinea pig will also let its human touch it. That's why you shouldn't overdo the stroking, especially at the beginning. Get your guinea pig used to it slowly. Less is often more. It is especially nice for the guinea pig if you put it on a blanket and lie down comfortably next to it. Or place it on a soft cushion on your tummy. Then you can cuddle and stroke it from time to time. If your guinea pig becomes small and flat or twitches, this is a sign of discomfort. Then try again the next day. Your guinea pig prefers to be lightly stroked behind the ear with the tip of your finger. But a little finger massage along the back is also good.
Guinea pigs need peace and quiet.
If you want to be attentive to your guinea pig, avoid a noisy environment. Guinea pigs are very sensitive to noise. High, shrill sounds in particular frighten them deeply. You should also avoid fast, jerky movements, which immediately set off the guinea pig's alarm. Children in particular have a habit of being too resolute with guinea pigs. It is therefore best to give your child a small cracker that they can hold out to the guinea pig at eye level. As a general rule, the calmer the environment, the less stressful the little furry friends will be.
Guinea pigs love variety.
Guinea pigs are often only seen sitting in small cages and munching away. What is often completely overlooked here: Guinea pigs like to move around, are curious and play with their fellow guinea pigs. When it comes to food, they are also happy to "work" for it and search for it.
